BARBARA LANDIN EGGER and HAROLD

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

What does Barbara (Landin) Egger have in common with these people:
Suzanne Pleshette, Tom Smothers, Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Richard Petty, Ned Beatty, Bill Cosby, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Swit, Gary Hart, Jane Fonda, and Mary Tayler More? We were all born in 1937.

April 22nd I was born to Margarette Mary and Carl Oscar Landin at the Methodist Hospital in Los Angeles. In addition to being born a Taurus "Bull", my father's having been Swedish and my mother's Irish and Choctaw Indian ancestries all combined to make me the person I am today.

During my early years and all the way through high school, the Taurus trait of being a homebody was evident in that we lived in only four locations during that time. In all those years, my folks and I took just two vacations, only one of which stands out in my memory.

My first home was on Dewey Street, followed by a more permanent move to 3414 London Street, both in Los Angeles, where I lived until 1st grade. Our next move was to 1428 Ontario Street, Burbank. We lived there until I started Valley College, at which time we moved to North Hollywood.

During our time in Burbank, I joined Job's Daughters and was later crowned Queen of the Hollywood Bethel in 1954. I began college immediately following Burroughs' graduation and, in a matter of days, quit to leave on April 20, 1955 for a four-month vacation. The three of us left in our little old Studebaker with everything necessary for a four-month trip (from toothbrushes to formal attire) piled about three feet high on top of the roof of the car. Our trip around the United States encompassed 41 of the then 48 states and took us 17,419 miles, with a little detour out of Florida to Havanna, Cuba, where we stayed for about a week . . . immediately prior to the revolution.

I began college in the fall upon our return. I immediately joined a sorority which was "good friends" with one of the fraternities whose new members were just returning from Korea. One of their new pledge class members was my future husband, Harold Egger.

We began a whirlwind courtship in December of 1956 and announced our engagement at the big fraternity Ball on February 3, 1957. We were married on July 20, 1957 the day after his 24th birthday. July 20th of this year we celebrated our 48th Anniversary.

We began our married life with a new "model" home in Northridge, just a couple blocks from the college. Kimberli Joyce, Jaime Lin and Harold Daniel II were born during the time we lived there. We moved to Dunsuir immediately prior to the earthquake. Our fourth and final child, Randy Bret, was born in Dunsuir.

Harold's employment took us from Dunsmuir to Kernville where we lived until we moved to Red Bluff, this time just before a big flood which rerouted the entire town of Kernville. We lived in Red Bluff for about ten years until moving to Pleasanton, where we remained until finally moving to Corning. We have lived here for the last 17 years.

Harold insists we'll remain here because, as he says, we've just accumulated too much "stuff" over 48 years to ever do it again.

During the time we lived in Dunsmuir I joined Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority. This year I celebrated my 40th year of perfect attendance. I have served as President of numerous chapters in the various towns where we have lived and as President of the Far Northern California Council. I was also recently surprised at a Brunch when I was awarded the International Award of Distinction, the highest honor in Beta Sigma Phi.

Harold recently retired from Bay Cities Diesel Machining Incorporated, a business which he began when we lived in Pleasanton. Even though he is supposed to be retired (and following back, hip, and cancer surgeries) his work-a-holic nature still keeps him busy eight to ten hours a day "manicuring" our little five acres and helping to care for me.

In lieu of regular vacations over the years, we bought timeshares in Maui, Hawaii and Tahiti. Four years ago, just prior to vacation, I was diagnosed with Amyloidosis and a month later, upon return, diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. The combined effects of these diseases have made the last four years somewhat difficult but have kept us very busy .
. . thank goodness too for Medicare.

All four of our children now have children of their own, 11 in total, ranging in age from 7 to 21. While I would love to live long enough to see them all married, I know THAT'S out of the question but, at this time, my goals are simply to make it to our 50th wedding anniversary and once again visit our places in Maui and Tahiti.

Do you know "Amy."? Learn more about Amyloidosis on the Internet at http://www.amyloidosis.org and help all of us fight our rare, fatal disease.....please! Barb
